Doctor Harisingh Gour Vishwavidyalaya, formerly known as the University of Saugar, was established on 18th July 1946 by Dr. Hari singh Gour (Nov. 26.1870 – Dec. 25. 1949) by his lifetime saving. This University of Madhya Pradesh has perhaps the singular distinction of being founded by the munificence of a single person, Sir Hari Singh Gour's hard earned money of about two crore rupees. Dr. Gour was the founder Vice–Chancellor of the University of Saugar. The Govt. of India honoured his memory by issuing a commemorative postage stamp in 1976. The University of Saugar was rechristened as Doctor Hari Singh Gour Vishwavidyalaya in February 1983 by the State Legislature. Its campus is spread on 830.3 hectares on the top of Patharia hills. It is one of the finest picturesque campuses in India. It has 36 University teaching departments (the number keeps adding) 10 faculties and 81 affiliated colleges covering 6 revenue districts of M.P. State Bank of India. Post office, STD booth, Employment and Guidance Bureau, University Hospital, University Press, 3 canteens and a shopping complex provide auxiliary services in the campus. Apart from conventional degree, postgraduate and research courses, Geology, Pharmacy, Criminology & Forensic Science, Anthropology, Performing Arts, Journalism & Mass Communication, Adult Education, Electronics, Business Management, Microbiology, Biotechnology and Computer Applications are some of the special subjects, which attract a large number of students from the four corners of the country. The Institute of Distance Education of the University runs various self-finance, Correspondence Courses such as in M.Lib.Sc., B.Lib., MC(J), BJ (C), PG Diploma in Environmental Marketing and Personnel Management, PG Diploma in Criminology and Police Administration. The University has a centre of Indira Gandhi Open University, Shrimant B.S. Jain Centre for Research and Education in Psychology. Muktibodh Peetha in the Department of Hindi has been created by the Govt. of M.P. The Botanical Survey of India has considered the Botanical Gardens of the University as the richest amongst those of Indian Universities. Madhya Bharati, the research journal of the University and the Bulletin of the Botanical Society of the University are internationally abstracted. The research journals from the Dept. of Sanskrit Sagarika and Natyam have pride of place amongst the indological journals of the country. "Isuri" the journal from the Bundeli Peeth of Hindi Dept. is a perennial source of Bundelkhandi art and culture. The discovery of an impression Edicaranfossil Spriggina by the Applied Geology Department has created much interest internationally. This University is declared as a Central University w.e.f. 15th Jan 2009.

At UG level, Dr. Hari Singh Gour University offers a number of courses in the fields of Arts, Science, Commerce, Business Administration, Computer Application, Law, Pharmaceutical Studies etc. The duration period differs for different courses. The university also provides Integrated programmes at the UG level.
Students seeking admission to B.A / B.Com / B.B.A / B.Sc. / B.C.A / B.Pharm./ B.A.L.L.B.(Hon)/ B.A.B.Ed./B.Sc.B.Ed Integrated and belonging to General (UR) and OBC categories must have passed 12th (10+2) or equivalent examination securing at least 45% marks in aggregate or equivalent in grade (4.7 in CBSE / ICSE System) in their Qualifying Examination from a recognized Board/Institution whereas, those belonging to SC, ST and PC (Physically Challenged) categories must have at least 40% marks in aggregate or equivalent in grade.
Admission to all the UG programmes is done through an Entrance Test named UGET organized by the university itself.
For admission to the BCA programme, students must have Mathematics at 12th (10+2) level
The Students who have passed through distance or external mode are not eligible to be admitted to the LLB 3 or 5 years programmes
Rounding of Marks or percentage is not allowed. For example, 50% marks means 750 marks obtained out of 1500 marks and 45% marks means 675 marks obtained out of 1500 marks (Even 49.9% and 44.9% shall not be considered as equivalent to 50% and 45% respectively).

At PG level, Dr. Hari Singh Gour University offers a wide number of courses in the fields of Arts, Commerce, Science, Business Administration, Computer Application, Pharmaceutical and Legal Studies.
Students seeking admission to any of the Postgraduate level courses and belong to Unreserved/General (UR) and OBC categories must have passed 12th (10+2)+3 or equivalent examination securing at least 45% Marks with 50% marks in the concerned subject or equivalent marks in the Qualifying Examination from a recognized University/Institution.
Students seeking admission to M. Pharm. programme should be graduated in B. Pharm. with 60% or equivalent CGPA and valid GPAT/GATE are eligible for admission.
Relaxation of 5 percent marks in Qualifying Examination will be given to Students belonging to SC, ST and PC Categories
Students who have passed B.C.A. examination through Correspondence or Distance mode from any university shall not be considered for admission in MCA.
Dr Hari Singh Gour University Ph.D Admission 2019
At doctoral level, the university offers Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) degree to the research aspirant Students. The Ph.D. programmes are offered under diversified specialization subjects. The intake capacity depends upon the nature of courses opted by the Students.
In order to seek admission to the Ph.D. programmes, Students need to hold a Master’s degree in the relevant discipline with at least 55% marks or equivalent grade (5% relaxation for SC / ST/ PC Students).
Admission to the Ph.D. programmes is done through an Entrance Test PHDET followed by an interview. Students who will secure 50% marks in the PHDET, will be called for interview.
Only those Students who were admitted in M.Pharm. with valid GPAT and fulfills the
minimum eligibility requirements for admission to Ph.D. programme will be considered for
Admission in Ph.D. Programme in Pharmaceutical Sciences.
The Students who have qualified UGC-NET (including JRF), UGC-CSIR NET (including JRF) are exempted from appearing in the PHDET. They will be directly called for interview
The student having Supplementary/ATKT/Backlog in any semester at the time of counseling shall not be granted admission.
